In August 2022, I joined an internship for the Long beach state athletics marketing department. it was also my first year attending the school as a student. ever since I joined I have been blessed with the creative freedom to produce videos and content for the sports teams. I am able to create content for social media pages for fans to see. This internship really kickstarted my videography career and the majority of my growth. Before joining lbsu, I mainly filmed basketball. since joining, I have been able to expand my experience in many more sports. This is my work so far with long beach state.
Mini-movies
This is something I started to do more recently, but I wanted to level up my storytelling in a way where the recap videos turn into more of a movie. Keeping everything in chronological order and displaying every impactful and emotional moment that happens throughout the game. Heavy use of coach speeches, commentary audio, and crowd reactions are huge in making the viewers feel as if they were at the game.
Win recaps
After a big win, I am tasked to create a recap of the game to put together all the emotions and energy of the game into a one-minute video. There were a lot of big games throughout the season where we were able to get the win. I was fortunate to capture all the moments throughout and create videos that showcase the same energy from those games. Mainly I created recaps for basketball and volleyball. These are normally my favorite videos to create.
In-game Highlights
During game days, I am not only tasked to film the game but also to create reels to be posted on socials. Throughout the games, I normally create around 4-6 reels per game. When I capture a play that I believe is worthy enough to be posted, I run to my computer during the next timeout or break. I import my sd card from my camera to my computer and it takes me about a minute and a half to edit that play. After I edit it I send it out to be posted on socials.
pregame hype videos
a day or two before a big game, I create a hype video to get fans and students excited to come to the games. Usually these videos consist of previous game footage, pregame interviews, and shots of students. these videos are to be posted before gamedays to create excitement for big and important games.
Survive and Advance
In sports, there are many moments that are full of emotion. One of my favorite moments is when a huge win or a playoff win gets captured on my camera. All the hard work, sweat, and tears pay off right in front of my lens.
Arrival Videos
there be occasions where I have to head to the arena/field multiple hours before game time in order to capture the athletes arriving. in addition, I also do arrival videos when we arrive at an opposing arena. this may also include travel days when we are departing by bus.
Editing Breakdown
My approach to editing comes down to two significant factors. Storytelling and sound emersion. These two key factors are what I found to have the most engagement and success for what I want the viewers to feel. I tend to avoid making the screen too busy with visual effects as I think that does not help with the story. I like to use commentary audio, complementary music, and sound effects to keep the viewers feeling as if they are a part of the game. If there are pre/post-game conference sound bytes, I love to include those throughout the video to continue to build that drama. In addition, I love to make sure I keep the energy from the games and apply it to the video. All the crowd reactions and players showing emotion are key in keeping my videos exciting to watch.
OffSeason Grind
Just because it is summer and sports are not in season, that does not mean there is room to slack off. Being a great athlete also means to train hard to prepare for the next season. Here is some content from over the summer.
